Food Glorious Food

I have a family of picky eaters. Knowing this, there are vitamin/mineral supplements for us all but they aren't always taken.

My husband eats meat, cheese, bread and potatoes. That's it. No, really, that's about it! Those items can be cooked a variety of ways but there can be nothing on those things except salt and black pepper.

My daughter is just as bad but different in her choices. She will eat bread, mac and cheese, plain pasta (no sauce), cheese, carrots, potatoes, and some fruits. She will drink soy milk and some regular milk and juices. While her diet seems more diverse than my husband's, her diet has come back to haunt her.

I had to take her to the clinic because she was having troubles. Apparently she is severely anemic. The doctor looked at her and said "There was a time when we gave blood transfusions to people when their iron was as low as yours is." She cringed. I swallowed hard, waiting to give her the lecture she has heard before about her diet.

Though I have nutritious foods in the house, she rejects them. Her objection to meat would not be so bad if she ate quantities of other iron-rich foods.

I hesitate to tell others because of the queries "Has she tried THIS or THAT?" Don't they know this is a battle I've dealt with for 17 years and we've tried it all?!

As the old saying goes, 'You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.'

Her bowl of spinach leaves and Romaine lettuce is staring at me, wilted and rejected from last night. I marvel how some people would so enjoy the foods my family detests.

Your husband and my husband must be brothers. I almost died the day I got my husband to nibble peppers.

Getting enough Iron is hard enough without the "pickies" - I hope she feels better ASAP. She's smart, you might want to challenge her to figure out how to get the iron from what she eats...

No picky eaters here. We eat everything and cuisines from all round the world. The only thing my peeps won't eat is tripe but what does she know? Have a terrific Thursday.
Best wishes Molly

I live with a picky eater, too. First of all, my husband is one of those people who "eats to live" - not "lives to eat!" He will eat chicken, but that's it on the meat front. Nothing with sauce, no dessert (he's never eaten a bite of pie - that seems downright sinful, huh?!), can't even look at condiments...need I go on?

Hoping your daughter finds a way to up her iron intake. She will be amazed how much better she feels.

I've got picky eaters too and hubby will eat almost anything. Praying that your daughter feels better quickly and that she finds a way to get iron into her diet.

Hope your daughters iron levels rise and she soon feels better.

Totally understand.

*giggles* from CA coast!!! Believe me, I understand. I myself prefer junk and comfort food. And I do know better, but it's just easier, faster and more comforting. Excuses, yes.

My mother refuses to do anything for her iron issues either. People can be so darn stubborn!

oh, AND prayers for your daughter to feel better fast!

Oh dear! My mum had blood tablets given to her for years when she was younger. It was for an other matter but she remember how awful it was!!! I hope things get better x

That's tricky. I am a GP and meet people similar all the time. As you say she has to make a wise choice and you can't keep hassling her. I hope she takes her iron and eats better choices. Maybe as she gets older she will be open to more food options.

As a picky eater myself, I can understand your frustration. My mom used to make me sit and sit for hours and hours at the table until I "ate" my vegetables... Usually, I found some way to dispose of them without eating them :) And to this day, I just can't stomach green vegetables.

I hope your daughter can figure out some way to get more iron into her diet--that is very scary for someone so young. Good luck!

I thought I was a picky eater! I don't eat meat aside from fish.
Sorry your daughter is suffering from anemia. I have a nurse-friend who said you can tell if someone is anemic by rubbing the edge of a nickel on their cheek. If it leaves a mark, they are anemic. WEIRD, but true.
I could sit and eat spinach all day long.

Yes, we have a picky eater too! I was told to make him a "Hulk" smoothie with spinach, fruit and yogurt. There are so many ways to make it, I need to experiment - especially with the summer fruits. Try it and have some fun, we'll have to compare recipes!

I was hospitalized with severe anemia when I was a freshman in High School. I think many teenage girls have it to some degree and go undiagnosed. I remember the weekly visits to the DR for B12 injections.
Some people {like me} cannot absorb B12 so I take SUBLINGUAL B12 daily with other supplements.
