Floss Fun and DMC Questions
I have been putting my DMC flosses on bobbins. Not only do I get to run my fingers across the lovely colors but this will organize my stash tremendously. I'd be curious how others organize their flosses.
Questions: Why are there so many missing numbers in the DMC line? It also switches from the hundreds to the 3000s? HUH? It really messes with my OCD.
As I was winding flosses, I noticed that some DMC had a number in parenthesis under the main number. Does this mean the colors are the same or they will be replacing one with the other...thus eventually giving us more missing numbers?
I haven't been stitching long enough to know the story. I suppose I could Google it but I also just wanted to ask here. Am I alone in this query???
Could it be that aliens abducted some colors? A cruel joke? A ploy to duplicate colors and sell more flosses by adding new numbers to the same flosses? Hmmmm......

When you are done organizing your flosses, I have a third floor packed to the ceiling with boxes that needs your attention! hehehe

You can tell I don't do needlework. I first thought this post would be about dental floss. :-)
It is interesting what they do to number or name different colors. Hope you find the answer to your query. Probably a marketing ploy.
I store my entire set of DMC colours pretty much like you do... in a box. However, my bobbins are lying on their sides instead of upright.

I have no idea how DMC comes up with the code for their colours. However, to answer your question, to date, here is the list of discontinued colours (on right) along with their replacement (on left).
407 3773
732 731
740 971
782 781
3326 776
3760 806
3813 504
I guess DMC figured they were too similar to produce simultaneously? *Shrug*
Hope that helps.
Hugs,
Veronica.
Hey Parsley, Good job on organizing your flosses. In regards to your question, I'm thinking a couple of years ago they did away with some colors that were really similar, and then put the older color in parenthesis under the one that is similar. I think....;'P
Anyway, I thought that is what I had heard.
Such a beautiful rainbow of colors to enjoy.

Have a great weekend ~

I've noticed that there some numbers missing but I don't know why.
Your thread stash looks lovely!
Nice job organizing your floss. I used to keep my DMC floss in zip lock bags grouped by increments of 50 - for example, DMC 300 - 350. The key words here are "used to", as it gotten quite disorganized over time.

hmmmmm. do you suppose that maybe a man picked the numbers for the colours? Yep, I bet that's what happened.
Any woman who ever had an eye for threads would have naturally numbered in order.
Be always in stitches.
I too thought this was about dental floss. You can tell I don't do needlepoint. :-)
I store my DMC floss in two multi-drawer cases (the kind you store nails, bolts, etc. in) that I purchased at the hardware store years ago. I made labels for all of the drawers with the floss #'s in order and then loaded them up. I also store my Kreinik, needles, pins, safety pins, and specialty threads in some of the drawers. It works for me!
The DMC website has tons of info about the threads, along with conversion charts for many other brands of embroidery threads.
Enjoy your weekend!
I printed out a list of all the DMC colors just to see which ones I was missing, and it drives me nuts that they skip numbers. I organize my floss the same way (on bobbins in boxes) and it makes is so much easier for me to find colors.
You have a large, varied, and beautiful collection.
ooo well done on the organising :)
mmmm the numbers in the brackets are what they have replaced ... something to do with the dye lots etc as sometimes they can't get the same dyes to do the same colour ... I seem to recall
not sure why there is missing numbers .... so sorry can't help you on that bit ... love mouse xxxxx
You make me smile.
DMC has been around for a very very long time - over the years they have expanded their colour range as demand for more colours has increased and as new dyes have allowed them to - also they have been updating the quality of their dyes - the most recent change was in late 1994 due to environmental concerns and new regulations - these changes in dyes have affected the colours some more so than others - this has resulted in the need to reorganize some not all but some of their colours into their new dye lot hence the change in numbers - the old number will be in brackets below the new number - I have some old charts of my mums that I am unable to do because the dye lots have changed so much - also to make things more confusing in 2001 dmc discontinued a bunch of colours and created new ones only for the european market - not to mention they also discontinued their entire flower thread line - just makes it difficult for us that have old charts - I found out all this after I worked on an old european chart of my mothers and wondered why it was not turning out the same as in the picture - hope this helps -
I'm glad to see ya back! Obviously (and embarrassing) I have been remiss on the blog reading :/...catching up, finally :)
Your bobbins are awesome...I keep my DMC the same way...and it works so well!
I know you already got answers to your questions...so I won't repeat...but to add, "I know, odd right?"
LOL

I'm not sure why they skip so many numbers. I'll have to google that one for myself because now you've got me curios.
For the threads that have a different number in paranthesis, the number in paranthesis is the number of the thread that the one you are holding is replacing.
That also has driven me crazy as I also organize my floss the same way in boxes on bobbins. Like the others said, I had heard that they had changed dye lots awhile back. I didn't know it was in 1994 though. I have mags from the late 80s. Could make it hard to do those patterns.
I organize my DMC this way:

Sooo pretty! :) All the colors and everything!
I think missing numbers may be discontinued or something.
I think what's happened is they've added new colours and stopped doing others but to make it clear the colours aren't the same as the original they've continued up the number list rather than going and filling in lower numbers.
I like the fact that you too are in cleaning mode! Hee Hee! These colors are so pretty like a rainbow!
