Oh RATS!

I took my daughter and adopted daughter (friend) on a girls' retreat this week. We went to a hotel, had some discussions with Bible study on hard teen issues, and went shopping. It was a lot of fun!! We were supposed to follow our overnight stay with a trip to the zoo but storms had taken out their electricity for most of the day. So instead of seeing the animals at the zoo, my daughter brought home an animal.....a rat.

Mind you, rats are not my rodent of choice. I prefer guinea pigs or gerbils. BUT you might consider saying yes to your kid if you saw the look on your kid's face like the one I saw yesterday.

Here's the story:  While shopping the first day, she saw it and held it. I had already told her 'no' because I felt she had too much on her plate next year. She didn't push the issue but mentioned it a few times during the rest of the retreat...dreaming I guess.

After the zoo trip failed we dropped by the store again to let her buy the aquarium plant she saw there since another store didn't have what she wanted. Of course she popped back over to see the rat. She pulled at my heart strings by saying something like, "I can't explain why, but I need her. She's special." Indeed she is...she is curly like a poodle. Well...

I told her to call her Dad. I told her to tell him mom said NO but explain to him what she said to me. Now, he is more logical and might be able to appeal to her logical side. During the wait for him to return her phone message, a man walks up with an employee to buy 2 rats from the cage. He didn't care which rats because they were going to be snake food.

My daughter gave me a look I've NEVER seen from her. This independent soul has always needed me but has never admitted that she needed my help. Her face went pale. Her eyes filled with tears. The look was 'please don't let this happen to MY rat'.

I walked over to the employee and asked if he would please not sell the curly rat because my daughter was waiting to see if she could adopt it as a PET. The men were happy to accommodate.

So...I texted my husband, who I knew would back me up on the 'no', to please say 'yes'.

Meet Diantha, named after the dianthus flowers.

I think she was meant to be in your household. Seemed like the timing was perfect for you all to be at the store right then to save her from a different time of life!

Oooooooh! I can see the fur is thick but I can't see the curls yet. This story reminded me of how I got one of my cats in the past. If I hadn't adopted her, she would have been snake food too. I was just horrified. And relieved when the guy let me have Tiamat instead of giving her to his roommate, the snake owner. *shudders* I had Tiamat for 16 good years!

Oh my, she is adorable!! I have a friend here at work who has rats...they are so friendly and love their people. I too am a guinea pig lover, but rats have a lot more personality!

I think this particular rat is adorable even though I am not inclined to like rats. ;-)

Well, I guess she is kind of cute...for a rat. I can't really see the curly fur, maybe you can get a closer picture some time. You will have to let us know how it goes...do you have any other pets?

Somehow your daughter knew she just had to save that rat! I'm sure he'll get lots of love!

Um, I am kinda with Gracie on this. But I would feel sick about the snake food part. I am trying to compare Diantha with my Mabel. Um, well, God loves rats too. That is good enough for me. :) Congratulations.

We had a rat in the greenhouse at Wisco. They are nice friendly rodents and you daughter being the "animal whisperer" should be able to tame it without a problem. I normally prefer guinea pigs as well but I think it will be a clever little pet for your menagerie.

What a lucky escape for the little rat!

I love rats, but can't have one because my hubby's not big on rodents. He tolerates guinea pigs and hamsters, but has said a huge "NO!" to a rat; said he'd buy a snake if I brought a rat! :(

Well, he is cute ^.^ Congratulations on a new family member. Funnily enough, I just got a pot of dianthus flowers yesterday.

Hugs,
Veronica.

Parsley,

Your animal whisperer strikes again. I am glad she ended up Diantha and not "Dinner"!

I hate to see them used as snake food! Ugh! My daughter has a snake with a huge appetite! I never look at the crazy snake! But she knows my older son and I can't stand her and she always comes out when she hears our voices! I just close my eyes!
Your daughter is a wise young lady! She saved a critter from a terrible death! I am not a rat fan but this one is sure sweet with nice markings! Lovely name too!
