If Dogs were Like Cars--A Goodbye to Rosie

I worked on this post days ahead knowing it would be too hard to write when we actually had to say goodbye. Now, it's time to publish.
___

If dogs were like cars, we could keep the 'oldies but goodies' running by just replacing the broken parts. Sadly, when dogs get broken, they feel pain and fatigue. Our best efforts to 'keep them running' buy us time, but eventually their bodies fail.

It took us a long time to learn what was making Rosie so ill years ago. It was diabetes. It took her sight but she didn't seem to care. She was loved and felt secure. She accepted the insulin shots without complaint.

A year after the diabetes diagnosis, we found she had cancer. We removed what cancer we could see and hoped there wouldn't be more issues. Thus, we got another year that wouldn't have been.

I believe there is a Heaven and I believe pets are there. I can't imagine Heaven being a place where that kind of pure love isn't celebrated and rewarded.

She was six years old when she blinked and grinned her way into our hearts four years ago. We will see that grin again when we too arrive in Heaven. Her sight will be restored. She will be fat and full of energy and love. She'll likely be digging holes in the dirt and chasing critters. She will be happy and whole.

She was such a gentle, loyal soul. I think she hung around so long because she loved us and wanted to please us. Finally, we had to let her go because WE loved HER.

Thank you to all who have loved her with us via this blog. I believe a proper goodbye should include a tribute to her, so I'm choosing to share snaps of happier times. In memory of sweet Rosie...

Oh Parsley. She definitely looked happy and loved. This was a great tribute, and it was a good idea for you to write it ahead of time. I love you guys. And I agree with everything you've said-- dogs are definitely in heaven. This brings to mind... Dog and God by Wendy Francisco? It really fits.

It is not goodbye, but rather, until you meet again.

I imagine her tail will be near wagging off, when she hears those familiar footsteps she remembers and her heart will shine in joy andlovewhen she sees you once again.

Hugs and much sympathy... rest without pain, Rosie basking in love.

Dear Parsley, Sage and Daughter,
Please know from one animal lover to another, I am sooo sorry for the pain you are feeling. To quote my words from Buster's post: (you were given) the gift of unconditional love and the lesson that all you need in life is a soft place to rest your weary head, a bowl of food and water, a patch of sunlight, a human touch, a loyal pack to run and play with, and forgiveness. I think dogs love us like God does -- totally and unconditionally. I am so glad Rosie was blessed with a good family and that you were blessed with her. (I know Buster is playing with her now.)
Love and Tears,
Deborah

What a beautiful post!! I am in tears while writting this. I am owned by two very loyal and loving terriers. My Westie Samson just turned 11 and while in good health I know that he will not live forever and that scares me. So I try to enjoy him and let him enjoy life as much as I can.
I also belive in Heaven and all of my past pets are romping around enjoying the sunshine and freshly cut grass.
My thoughts are with you while you morne the loss of Rosie, but she will forever be with you in your hearts!

I'm brokenhearted for you, and weeping at the computer. I'm glad you have so many obviously wonderful memories of Rosie.

I understand how you feel completely. I lost my cat, Eliza, in July of last year, and another cat, Lulu, in February.

They're waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

What a lovely tribute to a very special girl. I know that she is in a better place where her pain is gone. It is our job as our pe's owners to do what is best for them. That doesn't make it easy. I know that there is an emptiness it your home that will always be there without Rosie.

i can hardly read your post because of the tears welling in my eyes. i think saying goodbye to our furbabys is the hardest thing in the world to do. when i had to make the decision to end my kibbles' pain, i cried for days. i still cry for her and it's been over 2 1/2 years now. yes, our love has to be strong enough to let them go but that certainly doesn't make it any easier. i am feeling your pain and will be praying you and your family.

Parsley, I am so very sorry to read about Rosie. The pain & grief that you all are going through will fade but it will be a long while before you get to the point where you don't wake up with an ache in your heart & a hole in your life. Our Daisy has been gone 3 months now & I still shed a tear most days. Life is not the same without them around but our life was definitely enriched by them being with us. My thoughts & prayers are with you all. Rosie will be waiting for you on the Rainbow Bridge & you will be together again in Heaven. No words will ease the pain but I do hope that everyone's thoughts & hugs will give you all some comfort. Take care, hugs xx

I am so very sorry for your loss...I know nothing i could say will every make it any better but your memories and time.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our German Shepherd Dog of 14.5 years in May and we were a mess. I think at times I was just hysterical. See she was my medical alert service dog. I still miss her. We too did surgery and also chemo but we lost her two months later making the desicion to end her pain was awful. She meant the world to us. I believe animals go to heaven. I even found a cross stitch kit of The Rainbow Bridge story on 123 stitch.com praying for you

My heart hurts for you. I still feel my Boots presence in our home. He was a joy as I know Rosie was. Isn't it funny how pets just go on loving you even though they lose their sight, a limb etc.? I am praying and I agree heaven is for real and I know those pets are waitign for us. I had a dream when our Shadow lost his life in 2001. I know he will wait for us on the other side as Rosie will for you too! Here is my biggest Colorado hug I can send although my tears are falling for you! Blessings Anne
