This week, I am pet sitting for a momma dog and her pups. The owner cares for the dogs but they are not pets and don't get much affection. The momma dog is not 'loved' in the way I love my dogs. She does not know how to enjoy a scritch behind the ear, a kiss on the head or a soft voice whispering 'good girl'.
I realize pure breeds have a place and I do not want to trash the owners/breeders out there. I enjoy pure breed dogs. It's just that I expect more from the people raising/breeding them. Dogs have feelings. They need to be loved in a special way....but I digress.
The point of my post is to discuss Melody, my Chihuahua from the streets. We believe she was a breeding momma dog in her former life and was dumped when she was past her prime. Like the momma dog I am caring for, she did not know how to enjoy human affection. Her body would stiffen, she would tremble, and she would tuck her tail. It was truly sad.
Melody still has fears. Sometimes it takes us two or three times reaching out to her to get her to relax enough to let us pick her up. Believe it or not, that is progress! She also has a fear of loud noises. Below is a picture of her hiding in my closet during a thunderstorm last night. (I have given her this spot if she needs to escape storms.)
We feel fortunate to have the chance to redeem humans in her eyes. She now sleeps in perfect peace on her own pillow between our pillows on our bed. Often times she will be either snoring in our ears or stretching her feet into our heads. If I wake with insomnia and go to another room, she is right by my side helping soothe me.
She's come a long way and we've learned so much about love through this street dog's eyes.
(Melody sends a shy nose lick to Scout, her heart-throb, over at Fairfield House Inn.)

I don't understand why people view their pups as a "business". I couldn't banish them to a corner of the yard. Shoot, I bred my mare and still have her son (and Mom) many years later. They just mean more to me than a dollar sign.

Oh my goodness does she remind me of our Disco!
What a sweet post! I agree with you about breeding purebreds. I am all for purebreds and do not want to see any breed disappear, but I think only people who truly love their purebreds, and treat them as a family member, should be allowed to breed them. Puppy mills and people breeding only for money must end now. The dogs deserve so much better.
Melody is a beauty and I am so happy to read how well she is doing. That says a lot about you and your family and how loving you have been toward her to help her learn to trust again. Lovely!

I love, love, love dogs!! I have my whole life. So glad you guys do too.♥ http://astitchersstory.blogspot.com/
I am so glad you found Melody and she is loved.
It's always so great to hear about a rescue dog's success story. There ought to be a special place in heaven for those that take in unwanted animals. And...I just love your little one's name, LOL :)
Hi Parsley, so sad...about the Mamma dog...how can you not love a dog.... Your Melody sounds just like my rescued Shih Tzu Angel, what a site she was when we got her, matted from head to two, dirty, skinny, not fixed at 5 years old, her nails had grown around and dug in her little pads, she was walking on her nails, scared of noises, the broom, didn`t know how to play, act on grass.. two years later she has now become a wonderful loving girl...my shadow...love her dearly...always will rescue a throwaway....Blessings Francine.
Mom says HBO words when she hears about people like this we are glad you are there to take care of them

I remember when you first got Melody. And Seeing how far she's come, WOW, it is amazing!! :)
My oldest Sister is the kind that thinks dogs are there to work for you, nothing else. She rolls her eyes at how my mom and I baby Freddy and Buddy. She actually resents us for it. But I don't care. I agree with you, dogs have feelings too!
I get so disturbed when I hear stories like this. I feel as if any animal you bring into your home should be treated as a member of the family. Dogs in particular are really just little children who need love and attention to grow. If you can't love your children you shouldn't bring them to your home. (loving momma to 3 two legged kids and 5 four legged kids)
Parsley -
I am so glad that Melody (and Scout) found homes worthy of the big hearts in their tiny bodies. When I was in high school I worked in a pet store that sold puppies. The puppies came from mills and their papers were usually doctored, changing their date of birth, so they could be sold to the pet store before they were old enough to leave their mothers. Most were sick with kennel cough when we got them in. Very sad.
Your Friend,
Deborah
