OCD Stitchers?

Howdy ya'll! I'm perculating with excitement. I'm still working on larger stitching pieces but started a little Halloween stitch that is perfect for me. I avoid witches in my Halloween stitches unless it's really comical. I prefer pumpkins, haunted houses, and owls or cats. This has it ALL! I wanted to share my start with you.

I don't know how many of you are on facebook. I'm there mostly because of my dog sitting contacts but now I have many stitchy friends there. (I'd love to add anyone interested. Just email me.) I enjoy these connections so much! In fact I was invited to read along and join in some prim stitching groups. Really causes me to want to stitch more and faster. :-)

I have a question: Anyone out there with OCD? I don't worry about how my X's are or anything. Gosh no! I'm far from perfect and not a model stitcher by any means.

Well, I have seen a pattern online that I love. Problem is, some of the design is off center. I'm going to make a pretend example: Two birds with a heart in the middle between them, centered and even, but has a flowered border underneath and off center of the birds.

I can't stitch it. I could adjust the border and put it in the center, evenly beneath the birds but wouldn't that insult the designer? Maybe the designer meant for it to be that way. It's lovely really but it bothers my OCD.

Oh well, I have other things to stitch and applaud those that have the talent to design. What would you do?

Your Halloween piece is moving along, Parsley. I would probably fix it so it wouldn't bother me.

Hi Parsley! If I really loved the design I would adjust it and stitch it. I view patterns as more of a guideline, not something that is carved in stone. To me it's like working around a mistake. The mistake becomes part of the piece if I find it too late. =)

We can't help as we are not sewers but rest assured if we see a picture not hanging right we have to straighten it as it bugs us. Have a terrific Tuesday.
Best wishes Molly

If I really liked the pattern, I would probably modify it. I have done it before in the past. In the 2013 Ornaments JCS issue, there was this ornament called "Traveling with Santa" but as I started stitching it, I realized there was this extra thing that made no sense in respect to the rest of the design. So, I got rid of it and the ornament turned out just fine.

I have selective OCD - I mean somethings bother me horribly and somethings don't.

Don't worry about it - you do things your way - and you know? It turns out lovely.

Love your new start Parsley. Is that an older chart?

Lovely new start. I like symmetry too.

That is such a cute piece!

I tend to like things very symmetrical, too, so I would have trouble with a design like that one :)

Your Halloween piece is looking great! I love stitching Halloween too. That and Christmas.

Modify it to suit your tastes. It's your project and you're the one that needs to be happy with it.

love the new start and hmmmm that is a tricky one ...to be honest it would depend on whether it bugged me or not ... and to how I was going to finish it ... as that would really have a bearing on it ... hope that helps a bit >??? love mouse xxxxx

It may be the designers design, but... YOU make it. You make it with your own hands. So I would say, do what you want.

You know how many people change colors of a project? Isn't that the same idea?

Maybe the off-centering is supposed to make it whimsical, OR maybe it was an error. I would say go with your guy. Or OCD :)

I'm like that constantly it has to be matched up and even. Though I will say I have one piece that isn't killing me. The fabric has warped on the length so it's rectangles not squares but I love the colour so I deal. If you live the design that much move the flowers it's your piece in the end. I love your new start too

What a cute Halloween piece! I don't think it would bother me for things to be off center. You could change it to suit your eye. :) I have read where designers say they like it when people make a design their own.

I have a slight bit of OCD that doesn't allow me to do a lot of the primitive designs because of the non-symmetrical issues I find with them. (They can start out nice and even on both sides and then for no apparent reason an out of place item is only on one side...it throws me off. I find if most of the pattern is symmetrical then it all has to be. (oh and don't get me started on throwing in the words where ever just to fit them in....)

Cute Halloween project! As for the off center design--or any other design that has an element I don't care for or have an issue with--I would adjust the design, remove an element, switch it, etc.

Personally, I would change the design to what I wanted it to be. People do conversions all the time and I have never seen a designer complain about it. Visit my blog in about a week and see what I did to Home of a Needleworker. I completely changed it!
