Thanks to everyone who has stayed with me here in blog-land. I'm working on going through comments and adding you all to my 'favorites' list so I don't miss posts from my blog-friends.
The topic today for me is kittens. I think most of you know I am a dog lover but I do like cats. I just have a bad allergy to them.
Last week our daughter brought home kittens she found behind a local business. One had already died. The other four were at risk for succumbing to heat and starvation. They are now being hand-fed by my daughter.
Do any of you know much about how feral cats tend their young? These babies were 7-10 days old, blind, helpless, and all over the place. No adults were seen and the babies were crying for a couple of days. Like I said, one was already dead.
I thought most mother animals were more attentive. I was wondering if any of you have insight as to why this happens.
Anyway, these babies are now getting their eyes open. They can't live here but I'm scared we won't find them homes. Cats are easy to come by in these areas.

So kind of you to allow your daughter to take care of these little ones. It is possible that mother cat fell victim to traffic. I hope you're able to find homes for them when they're ready. Sounds like someone wasn't a responsible pet own and had their cat spayed/neutered. It's very nice to see you back.--Sharon
I've helped out at animal centres and we got lots of pregnant cats in. I have never, ever heard of a mother cat leaving her kittens. They tend to lie down and the babies feed continuously..I used to feel sorry for the mothers..they were just milk machines but seemed very content to be so, often being climbed over and tormented by their babies lol. I suspect these must have been taken off the poor mother forcibly or the mother cat killed. I share your allergy of cats but it never stopped me looking after them..
I hope these little beauties find a new home and someone to love them. X
Teresa at Shakespeare's Peddler does a lot of work with fostering cats and kittens. She may be able to give you some help/guidance. So glad you and your daughter have stepped forward to help out these babies!!
Cats, even feral ones, are attentive and loving mothers. Something horrible must have happened to keep that mother away from her babies. Perhaps she was killed, injured or trapped by the city for spay and release or impounded by animal control. Maybe the kittens were dumped there in hopes of rescue.
Your daughter has such a kind heart! I hope you are taking antihistamines, lol!
I your dogs are very interested in the kittens. :) I have not a clue for you. Thinking something happened to mama kitty.
Wish I lived by you so I could help. I'm sure hoping that you can find them good homes.

Mama cat would never have left her babies voluntarily. Something awful must have happened to her. Bless your daughter for rescuing them.
It's possible something happened to Momma. We've rescued several litters of kitties and have never had any issue finding homes for them. Good luck! They are adorable.

Something must have happened to the Mama Cat. They are very very attentive to their young.

I would guess that something happened to their mom too. I'm glad your daughter happened upon them and was willing to help!
Bless your daughter's loving heart - and yours, too. I feel so sad about animal stories like this. But, I am greatly encouraged that there are people like you guys who care. Best wishes for healthy kittens, and for just the right *homes* to come along.
GOD BLESS!
I agree with the others, something must have happened to the mother cat.
I have been allergic to some cats and not others. Which is weird! I hope you find these ones good homes if you can't keep them yourself. Could they be semi-outdoor cats and sleep in the utility room or somewhere easily moppable? Not the bedroom LOL.
